Etocryst-90

Etoricoxib 90 mg

Class: COX-2 Inhibitor (Selective NSAID)

Mechanism of Action:

  • COX-2 Inhibition: Etoricoxib selectively inhibits the COX-2 enzyme, which is involved in the production of prostaglandins that contribute to inflammation, pain, and fever. By specifically targeting COX-2, etoricoxib reduces these symptoms while generally having a lower risk of causing gastrointestinal side effects compared to non-selective NSAIDs.

Uses:

  • Osteoarthritis: Provides relief from pain and inflammation associated with osteoarthritis.
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis: Manages symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, including pain and swelling.
  • Acute Pain: Effective for treating acute pain conditions such as dental pain, postoperative pain, or musculoskeletal pain.
  • Gout: Can be used to treat the pain and inflammation of acute gout attacks.

Common Side Effects:

  • Gastrointestinal: Nausea, abdominal pain, dyspepsia (indigestion), and diarrhea.
  • Cardiovascular: Increased risk of hypertension, fluid retention, and, in some cases, cardiovascular events like heart attack or stroke.
  • Renal: Potential effects on kidney function, particularly with long-term use.
  • Other: Dizziness, headache, and rash.

Precautions:

  • Cardiovascular Risk: Use with caution in patients with a history of heart disease, stroke, or high blood pressure. Regular monitoring may be required.
  • Gastrointestinal Health: Long-term use can increase the risk of gastrointestinal ulcers and bleeding, though COX-2 inhibitors are generally less likely to cause these issues compared to non-selective NSAIDs.
  • Kidney Function: Monitor renal function, especially in patients with pre-existing kidney conditions or when used long-term.
  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Not recommended during pregnancy, particularly in the third trimester, due to potential adverse effects on the fetus. Consult a healthcare provider before use if breastfeeding.
